The Official Journal of Hans Island, Arctic Canada. The Hans Island Free Press provides its subscribers with reports on Canadian politics, culture, and general existence.
Hans Island/ Île Hans/ Tartupaluk/ Hans Ø lies at 80°49′41″N, 66°27′35″W in the exact centre of Kennedy Channel between Canada and Greenland. It has a land area of well over one square kilometre, and for decades has been the scene of diplomatic confrontation between the Governments of Canada and Denmark.
The inhabitants comprise the occasional wandering bear and white fox, and a raven or two. No humans occupied the island until The Editor and staff of the Hans Island Free Press established their offices here, and created the Autonomous Territory of Hans Island under the auspices of the Government of Canada. Our presence constitutes Effective Occupation under international law. A visa and health clearances are required of visitors: apply to The Editor.
